The first digit of a machine word will be the instruction number. This gives our VM the potential for having up to 16 different instructions. This is a small amount by contemporary standards, but it is plenty for our example virtual machine. The next three digits will be used for the operands.
Anthony Green did a blog series on coming up with an instruction set, porting binutils, gcc, newlib and so on, as well as setting up sim, and qemu to emulate a machine with this new instruction set.
I'd pick up a Deitel and Deitel book to start with. (probably this one if you're looking to do it in C) They always seem to have one chapter on making a virtual machine, along with some instructions for writing assembler code for your virtual machine, regardless of the language they're teaching. Edit - Added. Each virtual machine provides its own virtual hardware, including CPUs, memory, hard drives, network interfaces and other devices. The virtual hardware is then mapped to the real hardware on the physical machine which saves costs by reducing the need for physical hardware systems along with the associated maintenance costs that go with it, plus reduces power and cooling demand.Virtual machines The first thing to do when creating virtual machines with the Azure Portal is log in to Azure with your administrative credentials. It would be hard to write a compiler that outputs bytecode when we don’t have a good understanding of how that bytecode behaves. So, before we go and build the front end of our new interpreter, we will begin with the back end — the virtual machine that executes instructions. It breathes life into the bytecode.Read More

The other day we were looking at Probrand’s virtual machine service. While doing so we started to think about whether virtualization is worthwhile for small business owners. The benefits for larger firms that require a lot of computing power and employ a big workforce are fairly obvious.Read More
Configuring a virtual machine lets you add and remove virtual hardware to and from the virtual machine. To configure a virtual machine, you must have Read and Write permissions for the virtual machine's configuration file and virtual machine resources (such as a physical disk or certain devices) on a Windows host, or read and write ( r and w ) permissions on a Linux host.Read More
